DIGITAL SPEEDOMETER FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Refer also to the Troubleshooting page.

Can I buy a speedometer direct from you?

Yes. In addition to sales through our dealers you are able to buy our speedometers direct from us through our Store or by telephone using a credit card.

Orders received in the Store and by telephone are shipped Australia-wide the same day (or next working day if received on a weekend or public holiday) by Australia Post Parcel Post or Express Post.

I do not have the instructions for my digital speedometer. Where can I obtain them?

The instructions are available for both viewing and downloading on the Installation page.

What do I use to clean the dashboard before installing the speedometer?

Before installing a speedometer the dashboard or other mounting location should be thoroughly cleaned with a silicone release agent. These can be obtained from most local hardware shops. Cleaning is necessary to remove dirt and residue from polishing products which may prevent effective adhesion of the speedometer.

How does the HillSpeed HUD 09 work?

The HillSpeed HUD 09 works by using GPS satellites to calculate the change in position (distance) travelled by the vehicle and therefore its speed. It operates completely independently from the speedometer system in the vehicle.

I live in a country other than Australia. Will the HillSpeed HUD 09 work in my country?

The HillSpeed HUD 09 works by using GPS satellites. These satellites do not distinguish between different countries or locations. The HillSpeed HUD 09 will therefore work anywhere in the world.

Can I install the HillSpeed HUD 09 myself?

Yes. All that is required to install it is to connect it to power (12 volt or 24 volt) using the cable supplied with it to either an accessory outlet (often the cigarette lighter outlet) or another power source and mount it using the supplied double sided tape in a suitable position on the vehicle’s dashboard. Adhesive velcro to allow the speedo to be temporarily removed from its mounting position is also provided.

Complete installation instructions with diagrams are supplied with the speedo.

An additional cable for permanent power connection is also provided with the speedo to allow for a qualified auto electrician to do the power installation.

What is the size of the HillSpeed speedometer?

The HillSpeed HUD 09 is 78 mm wide x 73 mm deep (front to back) and 50 mm high. The bright yellow colour digital display is 25 mm high.

Can the HillSpeed Speedometer be installed on a curved dashboard?

The HillSpeed speedometer is supplied with 3 tapering plastic wedges which can be attached to the base of the speedometer to adjust its tilt angle, allowing it to be installed on curved and sloping dashboards.

My speedometer has begun to show speeds which are very low and appear to be wrong. Why is this?

The HillSpeed HUD 09 can display speeds in both kilometres per hour and miles per hour. Unless requested, all are set in the factory to display kilometres per hour.

It is possible to accidentally change the display speed to miles per hour by holding down the push button switch supplied with the speedometer while the vehicle is being started.

Changing the display back to kilometres per hour is very simple. For the HUD 09 the instructions for this can be downloadedon this page and are as follows:

  • Read these instructions in full to familiarise yourself with them before commencing changing the speed display.
  • Park the vehicle in a safe stationary position with the handbrake engaged, neutral or park gear selected and the engine turned off.
  • Ensure that the speedometer is plugged into its power supply, its display is visible from your position and that the push button switch is connected to it.
  • Hold down the push button switch and turn on the vehicle engine. The speedometer display will alternate between -60 and 1.00.
  • Continue to hold down the push button switch until the desired display is shown and then release the button.
    • -60 = Miles per hour display
    • 1.00 = Kilometres per hour display
  • The display will show the selected speed display. This will be retained even after the vehicle engine and the speedometer are switched off.

If you wish to change to the other type of speed display, repeat these instructions from the beginning.

What parts come with the HillSpeed speedometer?

The HillSpeed HUD 09 speedometer is supplied with:

  • a power lead with a power plug which fits the accessory outlet in most vehicles.
  • a power lead for connection to permanent power supply, a push button lead for setting and changing the overspeed alarm.
  • a switch lead for setting the overspeed alarm and changing settings.
  • 3 plastic tapered wedges for adjusting the angle of the speedometer
  • 2 sets of double sided tape and
  • 1 set of adhesive velcro for fixing the speedometer to the dashboard.

How long is the power lead on the HillSpeed HUD 09?

The power lead which plugs into the accessory outlet of the vehicle is 140 cm long.

Is the speed shown on my HillSpeed HUD 09 correct?

Where the HillSpeed HUD 09 can access sufficient GPS satellites (3 minimum), the display operates and is updated once per second. The displayed speed will be correct and accurate. Where the vehicle is accelerating quickly or braking (slowing) quickly, the displayed speed will lag behind the actual vehicle speed until the display next updates. When the vehicle is traveling at a reasonably constant speed (not accelerating sharply or braking heavily) the speed display will be accurate.

Is the speed displayed on my HillSpeed HUD 09 correct on steep hills?

The slope of the ground (or roads) on which a vehicle is traveling gives no practical difference to either the correct speed or the speed displayed on the HillSpeed HUD 09. Even on a steep slope of 1 in 8 (12.5% slope), the difference between the horizontal distance and the distance measured on the slope is less than 8 metres in each kilometre (0.778%).

When starting for the first time each day, my HillSpeed HUD 09 takes a long time to start displaying the speed. Is this normal?

After being turned off for a long period of time (such as overnight), the HillSpeed HUD 09 needs to scan to find the positions of the GPS satellites. It does this when it first starts up and this normally takes about 30 seconds before the speed display is shown. If the vehicle starts to move before the scan has been completed (while the display is still cycling in a rotating pattern), then the start up scan can take much longer. It is recommended that the vehicle remain stationary until the HUD 09 has completed its start up scan and the speed display is shown.
