The following are the most common reasons a turbo timer will not work straight after it has been installed.
The black earth wire needs to be earthed correctly and the green wire (park brake interface) needs to be connected to the park brake or earthed. The timer will not operate if either of these are not done.
The timer will also not operate unless the engine has been running for a minimum of 30 seconds. This a deliberate safety feature to ensure that the timer does not operate where the engine is inadvertently started.
If, after following the installation instructions included with the timer and checking the

Why does my remote central locking not work?
With most modern vehicles the remote central locking is disabled whenever the engine is running. This only applies to the remote itself on the ignition key or keyring. This is to prevent unwanted flashing of blinkers or sounding of the horn while driving.
Where a turbo timer is fitted to provide an engine idle period, the remote locking may be disabled until the end of the idle period. The vehicle may still be locked using the ignition key at the drivers door, employing the central locking.
However, where the law requires, the driver should remain seated in the vehicle until completion of the engine idle period.
Can I get a replacement turbo timer control unit?
Yes, control units are available as a separate part from your
dealer. However, you must identify the series of the timer (624, 724, 725, 925 series) and the timer model. These are normally printed on the white label on the top of the main timer module. Control units will only work with the correct module from the same series and model.
TURBO TIMERS - WIRE IN TYPES
We regularly assist customers who are having issues when installing wire-in type turbo timers. These issues are often related to one of the following topics.
How does the HillSpeed HUD 09 work?
The HillSpeed HUD 09 works by using GPS satellites to calculate the change in position (distance) travelled by the vehicle and therefore its speed. It operates completely independently from the speedometer system in the vehicle.
Can I install the HillSpeed HUD 09 myself?
Yes. All that is required to install it is to connect it to power (12 volt or 24 volt) using the cable supplied with it to either an accessory outlet (often the cigarette lighter outlet) or another power source and mount it using the supplied double sided tape in a suitable position on the vehicle’s dashboard. There are complete installation instructions, with diagrams, supplied with the speedo. An additional cable for permanent power connection is also provided with the speedo, for a qualified auto electrician to do the power installation. Adhesive velcro to allow the speedo to be temporarily removed from its mounting position is also provided.
Where can I purchase a HillSpeed speedometer?
Both models of the HillSpeed speedometer can be purchased from:
- this web site, using a credit card for payment. Go here to register and then purchase.
- by telephoning us and giving you credit card details. Orders received this way and from the web site are shipped Australia-wide the same day by Express Post.
- from any of our dealers. The location of your nearest dealers can be found using our search system. Note that most dealers do not carry stock of our products. We regularly ship to them for next day delivery.
What is the size of the HillSpeed speedometer?
The HillSpeed HUD 05 is 78 mm wide, 73 mm deep (front to back) and 39 mm high. The HillSpeed HUD 09 is slightly taller; 78 mm wide, 73 mm deep (front to back) and 50 mm high. Both models have the same size bright yellow colour digital display which is 25 mm high.
What parts come with the HillSpeed speedometer?
Both models of the HillSpeed speedometer are supplied with a power lead for connection to permanent power supply, a push button lead for setting and changing the overspeed alarm, 3 plastic tapered wedges for adjusting the angle of the speedometer, 2 sets of double sided tape and 1 set of adhesive velcro for fixing the speedometer to the dashboard. The HillSpeed HUD 09 model is also supplied with a power lead with a power plug which fits the accessory outlet in most vehicles.
How long is the power lead on the HillSpeed HUD 09?
The power lead which plugs into the accessory outlet of the vehicle is 140 cm long.
Why does my HillSpeed HUD 05 give a different speed reading to my vehicle speedometer?
If calibrated correctly, (for example with a GPS receiver or on a dyno) the HillSpeed HUD 05, gives a completely accurate speed display. The vehicle speedometer is permitted by Australian Design Rules, for all speeds above 40 km/h, to have an accuracy of +/- 10%.
Is the speed shown on my HillSpeed HUD 09 correct?
Where the HillSpeed HUD 09 can access sufficient GPS satellites (3 minimum), the display operates and is updated once per second. The displayed speed will be correct and accurate. Where the vehicle is accelerating quickly or braking (slowing) quickly, the displayed speed will lag behind the actual vehicle speed until the display next updates. When the vehicle is travelling at a reasonably constant speed (not accelerating sharply or braking heavily) the speed display will be accurate.
Is the speed displayed on my HillSpeed HUD 09 correct on steep hills?
The slope of the ground (or roads) on which a vehicle is travelling gives no practical difference to either the correct speed or the speed displayed on the HillSpeed HUD 09. Even on a steep slope of 1 in 8 (12.5% slope), the difference between the horizontal distance and the distance measured on the slope is less than 8 metres in each kilometre (0.778%).
When starting for the first time each day, my HillSpeed HUD 09 takes a long time to start displaying the speed. Is this normal?
After being turned off for a long period of time (such as overnight), the HillSpeed HUD 09 needs to scan to find the positions of the GPS satellites. It does this when it first starts up and this normally takes about 30 seconds before the speed display is shown. If the vehicle starts to move before the scan has been completed (while the display is still cycling in a rotating pattern), then the start up scan can take much longer. It is recommended that the vehicle remain stationary until the HUD 09 has completed its start up scan and the speed display is shown.
Can the HillSpeed Speedometer be installed on a curved dashboard?
Both models of the HillSpeed speedometer are supplied with 3 tapering plastic wedges which can be attached to the base of the speedometer to adjust its tilt angle, allowing them to be installed on curved and sloping dashboards.
